“In post apocalyptic America, the key to survival is leadership and the training of great leaders takes place at the University. To make it to the University, a select number of students from colonies across the surviving landscape must first make it through The Testing. Charbonneau's first foray into writing for young adults yields cliffhanger after cliffhanger, making it impossible to find a point for the reader to pause. Every scene, every word becomes important to the end of this story, so pay close attention: You do not want to fail The Testing!”

“Starting with an adrenalin rush and somehow keeping up a breathless pace, Yancey tells a desperate and stunning story of love and loyalty in the middle of a thriller. The 5th Wave follows four kids in the months following an alien arrival, when the battle for life pushes everyone to their physical and psychological limits. While each character must choose between a violent will to survive and an exhausted surrender, holding onto humanity may be the most heartbreaking challenge of all.”

“In 1960s New York, sixth-grader Julian 'Twerp' Twerski has just returned to school after a weeklong suspension, when his English teacher offers him a deal. If he writes a journal about the incident that got him suspended, Julian can get out of writing a report on Shakespeare. At the beginning of the book it's unclear why Julian and his friends were suspended, but more details come to light as the journal entries progress. The book's greatest strength is that it calls attention to the important issues of friendship, peer pressure, and bullying without preaching or talking down to the reader. Julian is a flawed character, but he's someone you can't help but root for.”

“Great for Mo Willems fans, this funky, funny tale fills you with giggles and leaves you craving watermelon. “Ever since Jeremy Johnson Johnson admitted that he could hear voices, the townspeople have treated him as an outsider. So life has been hard, but Jeremy does have a companion -- the voice of Jacob Grimm, one half of the Brothers Grimm. Jacob watches over Jeremy and protects him from the evil in the world. When Ginger Boultinghouse becomes interested in Jeremy, things start to happen that Jacob may or may not be able to stop. Narrated by Jacob, this book was lovely and thrilling at the same time -- I cannot wait to talk about it!”

“Joel wants desperately to be a Rithmatist -- part of a select order that can bring chalk drawings to life to battle wild chalkings and keep the human race safe. But since he's not a Rithmatist, Joel spends his time learning everything he can about Rithmatics and befriends an outcast professor and student, who end up helping him in his own battle. Every part of me loved this book -- the math geek, the fantasy lover, the sucker for happy endings, the book snob. It's excellent. The story is well-plotted, giving away just enough, but not too much. It grabbed me from the very beginning and ended with a goofy grin on my face, despite my strong desire for a sequel.

“Wild Awake, the debut novel of Hilary T. Smith, introduces readers to one of the most memorable characters in young adult literature since Holden Caulfield, seventeen-year-old Kiri Byrd. With her parents away for the summer, Kiri looks forward to time alone with hours to practice her piano, win the Battle of the Bands, and convince Lukas that they should be together forever. However, a phone call from a mysterious stranger changes everything, plunging Kiri both into a seedy world where her older sister had lived and died as well as into a psychological descent, so raw and intricately portrayed, that Kiri simply must prevail or be destroyed. Heart-wrenching, powerful and much more than a coming-of-age story, Wild Awake, perfectly portrays a forced maturity, one in which a strong human spirit refuses to be undone, whatever the cost. Highly recommended.”

“My first reading was, of course, from an adult point of view...so I reread it twice. This is about one bull who got out of the wrong side of the bed and is being mean and grumpy. I suppose one could interpret his behavior as bullying but that did not come across very clearly. As a read-aloud to youngsters it would provide a great lead in to a discussion of bullying and should elicit plenty of examples from the audience. And this is GOOD!
The language used is terrific and the illustrations are minimal and spot on!”

“The invisible narrator invites us to count the monkeys in the book, but for some reason, the monkeys have trouble appearing. At first, a king cobra scares all the monkeys away and then mongooses chase off the cobra. The story continues with hilarious situations on each page, and the narrator encourages the reader to do some sort of activity (close your eyes so the wolves don't see you) when you turn the page. This is a great story for home or the classroom and Kevin Cornell's illustration enhance the entertainment. For ages 4 and up.

“The Day the Crayons Quit is one of cleverest, funniest picture books I have ever read. It will motivate readers to treat their Crayola boxes with a little more care and show compassion and understanding to the hardworking, surprisingly opinionated waxy stubs that allow anyone to be an artist, or at least a doodler. Drew Daywalt has finally given crayons a voice, and they have a great deal to say! In addition, they have Oliver Jeffers to illustrate their daily trials and manifold sufferings, which he does brilliantly. So, readers: stop tearing the paper casing off your crayons (read this book if you need a reason why!), and bask in the happy, energetic glow of The Day the Crayons Quit.”

“scape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, by Chris Grabenstein (Random House, $16.99) is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for bibliophiles, mixed with The Westing Game. It's an ode to children's literature. This book is a must-read for anyone who likes to read and has read a lot, if nothing else than for the enjoyment of the prolific and well-placed references to the best of children's literature.
Eccentric Mr. Lemoncello rebuilds the public library and invites twelve 12 year olds to participate in a lock-in. The town has not had a library for twelve years and he wants to share his love of reading with a group of kids who have grown up without the benefit of a public library. The lock-in morphs into a game. The first player who discovers how to get *out* of the library will win the grand prize. So you can see why bibliophiles will love this book; it is one long celebration of books and reading. What I loved most, however, is that the game and the clues were revealed in such a way that the reader could play along with the characters. I didn't have to passively watch the characters solve riddles (one of the things that really frustrated me about The Mysterious Benedict Society), but instead I could participate and try to figure out the puzzle for myself along the way. Almost everything in the book is a clue of some sort, so I found myself reading very carefully, trying to remember all the details. Clues are repeated throughout the book, however, which was useful because I didn't have to write it all out, although I did consider doing so! Read, play, and enjoy!”

“Ink is an enchanting, well-written, and deliciously dark story that will pull readers into a beautiful and dangerous world, one they won't want to leave. Amanda Sun has crafted a brilliant and refreshing mythology, and delivers a magical setting. Readers will be swept away by Japan's beauty and Ms. Sun's artful descriptions.
Katie makes for a wonderful narrator. She's funny, vulnerable, and strong-headed. I liked that she never backs down and is always ready to join the fight to protect those she cares about. Her relationship with Tomohiro is tumultuous, yet enthralling, and I loved the banter between them.
Ms. Sun has created an utterly unique and splendid mythology revolving around ancient Japanese gods and their descendents, and I absolutely loved this aspect of the book. The mythology is reminiscent of Lani Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone and is sure to draw readers in and leave them hungry for more.
The author unravels the plot at a fluid, even pace and skillfully combines Katie's more mundane activities with her fantastical and dangerous ones with Tomohiro and his powers. This combination results in a great balance in tone and plot development. The dialogue is smooth and believable, and it was fun learning a few Japanese terms along the way. I do wish some of Ms. Sun's character descriptions weren't repeated as often as they are, but overall she is a very skilled writer.
One of my other favorite elements of the book are the illustrations. While they are sparse, they provide an extra dash of magic to the overall product and work well with the story.
Overall, Ink is a fantastic debut and I cannot wait for the sequel. Amanda Sun has created a stunningly beautiful piece of art and is sure to enchant readers with her work. She is definitely an author to watch!”

“Invisibility is about a teenager who is invisible. Now as fantastic as this occurrence might be, it still strikes me as an interesting universal metaphor of the teen experience. Isn't that one of the tropes of teenagedom? Feeling like no one 'hears' you or 'sees' you? Trying you damnedest to see yourself and figure out how to present yourself to the world? Another common trope is the jubilation of meeting someone who finally does see you for who you really are. And this book has an interesting twist on that concept, too. When Elizabeth meets Stephen, she has no idea that he's invisible, because she can see him. It's kind of brilliant actually. It's a poignant reminder that what we see isn't always seen by others. The fantasy part of this book is good. But it's the parts that feel the most real, the conundrum of invisibility, that make it an amazing story.”

Almost. When her younger brother begins working with a new teacher, though, Lucy begins to experience a flood of doubt. Is it possible she has a future in music that isn't just to please her family?
Sara Zarr is one of the most consistent, compelling authors on the YA scene. Her stories ride the fine line between hilarity and heartbreak with breathtaking precision. I am never anything less than fully engaged while reading a Sara Zarr novel--her love for her characters seeps through the pages. It's infectious.
In The Lucy Variations, it's Zarr's deft ability to create human (read: complicated!) relationships that's most compelling. Lucy must navigate a whole host of challenges on her way to finding herself, and Zarr doesn't take the quick way out by providing easy answers. Right and wrong aren't always clearly laid out in black and white.”

“In the Republic of Texas you are better off as a Reboot, a person who has died and returned to life, than you are as a human. Also, the more time spent dead, the stronger, faster, more powerful, almost invincible you become; but, in return, you are colder and less emotional than a human. Wren, aka, One hundred seventy-eight, died five years ago at the age of twelve and is one of the top trainers of new Reboots. Callum, Twenty-two, a newbie, is practically still human and not regarded as a favorable trainee. Usually Wren picks a newbie with a high number as they are more likely to survive, but, something about Callum's smile tugs at her and she chooses him, even though at one point he describes her as 'a monster who enjoys hunting people.' But when Wren is told to eliminate Callum, they go on-the-run together with little hope of surviving. “Jessica Spotswood created an incredible alternate reality in Born Wicked and continues her winning streak in the series’ second book, Star Cursed. Now officially a member of the Sisterhood, Cate sees firsthand the increasingly drastic steps the Brotherhood is taking in hunting down witches and tightening their hold on New England. However, the Sisterhood is fracturing from within as witches take sides; there are many who want to take power through violence, and most are still doubtful of Cate’s talents. When Cate’s sisters join her, she hopes they can work together, but her sisters have changed in her absence – Maura is less inclined to follow, and Tess carries a heavy secret. It seems there is no dodging the penalty of the prophesy in which one sister betrays another, and the Sisterhood is getting desperate – will Cate step up as their leader, or will Maura muscle her aside? I was enthralled by the next part of the Cahill sisters’ story, and the horrifying cliffhanger left me thinking of the book for days after.
